Mukesha Barker joined the Institute for Rural Health Research in 2004 as a Research Assistant. In this role, she conducts focus groups, compiles and analyzes data, and presents findings for multiple community-based research projects in the Alabama Black Belt. Her role also involves grant proposal and manuscript development.
In other responsibilities, Barker coordinates the Institute’s annual grant writing series for junior faculty investigators. She is also in charge of planning and organizing the Research Poster Session for the Institute’s annual Rural Health Conference.
Barker received a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of South Alabama in Mobile. Following graduation, she completed a summer research fellowship in the Department of Cell Biology at the USA College of Medicine, where she conducted research on sickle cell disease. Barker is a native of Greensboro, Alabama.
