John E. Brandon, MD

 

John E. Brandon, M.D., is Medical Director of the Rural Medical Scholars Program (RMSP) and a Clinical Professor of Family Medicine and Rural & Community Medicine at The University of Alabama College of Community Health Sciences.  He is a family physician in Gordo, Alabama, where he entered private practice in 1981, and has over 25 years experience as a family physician in rural practice and as rural preceptor,  mentor, and teacher to medical students, pre-med students, and family practice residents.  He has been honored as "Preceptor of the Year" by the College of Community Health Sciences and has served as president of the Alabama Chapter of the American Association of Family Physicians and as AAFP Board Chairman. He presently serves as Alabama Academy of Family Practice vice president for the northwest region, 2006-2010.  Dr. Brandon is a member of UASOM Admissions Committee.  In both  AAFP and Admissions leadership roles,  he has helped to initiate discussions that have led to formation of our sister rural medical education program at AU/Huntsville. He is a member of state ARAC (Alabama Rural Action Commission) and co-chairs the ARAC Region 2 Health Committee.

Dr. Brandon graduated from Davidson College in North Carolina and earned his M.D. degree at Tulane.  He completed residency training at the Tuscaloosa Family Practice Residency.  He is a Board member representing Pickens County for the Rural Alabama Health Alliance (RAHA), a voluntary grassroots organization founded to voice rural interests regarding policy issues in health care, community development, and medical education.  In addition to RAHA and AAFP, he is active in the Medical Association of the State of Alabama (MASA) and served for four years on Alabama's Medicaid Pharmacy Utilization Review Committee. He been the team physician for Gordo High School sports for 25 years and was named “Gordo Citizen of the Year” in 2004 by the Chamber of Commerce.
