CCHS Rural Medical Scholar hosts community event

Kelsei Elmore, a Rural Medical Scholar at the College of Community Health Sciences, hosted Minds Matter: Youth Wellness Fair on Friday, March 27, at the Theo Ratliff Activity Center in Demopolis, Ala.

The free event, part of Elmore’s Capstone Project, promoted youth mental health awareness and education by offering resources, activities and food for attendees.

The Rural Medical Scholars Program is part of the College’s Rural Health Leaders Pipeline and is exclusively for rural Alabama students who want to become physicians and practice in rural communities. The five-year program leads to obtaining a medical degree and includes a year of study and a master’s degree in rural community health at CCHS, after students receive their undergraduate degree, as well as early admission to the UAB Heersink School of Medicine.

Rural Medical Scholars complete a Capstone Project by conducting a community assessment of their hometowns to identify a significant health or environmental issue and propose a strategy to address it.
