College names new chief residents 

Three residents of The University of Alabama Tuscaloosa Family Medicine Residency Program were named chief residents for the 2026-27 academic year. The residency is operated by UA’s College of Community Health Sciences.  

The new chief residents and their leadership roles:  

  • Dr. Vishal Sharma – Recruitment 
  • Dr. Andrew Longanecker – Scheduling and patient safety 
  • Dr. William Fagan – Curriculum 

“I could not be more excited to have Drs. Sharma, Longanecker and Fagan step into leadership roles at this moment,” said Dr. Tamer Elsayed, residency director. “We look forward to working closely with each of you, investing in your leadership development and watching you guide your peers through these extraordinary changes.”  

The new chief residents start in their new roles on July 1. They replace chief residents Drs. Emily Brown, Callie Hillman, Marwan Mahmoud and Chase Britt.  

The UA Tuscaloosa Family Medicine Residency Program is one of the oldest and largest family medicine residencies in the United States, providing graduate medical education in the specialty of family medicine. The College also offers post-graduate medical education through year-long fellowships for family medicine physicians in behavioral health, emergency medicine, geriatric medicine, hospital medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics and sports medicine.
