Generous supporters of the College of Community Health Sciences provided $11,241 in gifts to support the College’s Psychiatry Residency Gift Fund during the 2026 University of Alabama Bama Blitz 48-hour online fundraising campaign.
The funding was provided through 71 individual gifts, including a generous donation from Bryant Bank.
In July 2026, CCHS welcomes the first class of residents to its UA Tuscaloosa Psychiatry Residency Program, which was accredited in 2025 and launched in early 2026. The residency seeks to address the critical need for psychiatrists in the state and expand access to high-quality mental health care across Alabama.
The program is for medical school graduates and will prepare board-eligible residents in the field of psychiatry. The four-year residency allows for six residents each year, with the first class starting in July.
The Tuscaloosa Psychiatry Residency provides opportunities for residents to learn and work alongside highly skilled and experienced mental health care professionals in a range of inpatient and outpatient settings, including urban medical centers and rural community sites. The Psychiatry Residency Gift Fund will enhance resident education, and support innovative training opportunities and hands-on clinical experience
The psychiatry residency joins the UA Tuscaloosa Family Medicine Residency Program, also operated by CCHS and one of the oldest and largest family medicine residencies in the nation.
