Long a provider of pharmacy services for University of Alabama students, the College of Community Health Sciences expanded those services in 2026 to UA employees covered under the University’s health insurance plan.
“This is an important step in our efforts to enhance the patient experience and to optimize the health outcome of our patients,” said Dr. Richard Friend, dean of the College of Community Health Sciences. “We believe that pharmacy services are essential to improving medication adherence and to delivering a superior patient care experience.”
The pharmacy services are provided by the College’s University Health Service Pharmacy. CCHS also operates the UA Student Health Center and Pharmacy and University Medical Center, which cares for UA employees through its Faculty-Staff Clinic and other clinics. UMC also cares for members of the public throughout West Alabama.
University Health Service Pharmacy carries common prescription items as well as some over-the-counter medications.
In addition to serving students, the pharmacy can fill prescriptions from UMC clinics, including the Faculty-Staff Clinic, and can also fill prescriptions from outside healthcare entities. In addition, the pharmacy can help UA employees and students transfer their prescription refills from another pharmacy to University Health Service Pharmacy.
Pharmacists are also available to provide free counseling to discuss patient medications and health concerns, or to recommend over-the-counter products to treat short-term illnesses that don’t require a doctor’s visit.
