James Leeper, PhD — Professor Emeritus

James Leeper, PhD, is professor emeritus in the Department of Community Medicine and Population Health and director of Education and Evaluation for Rural Programs in the Department of Family, Internal, and Rural Medicine. Leeper teaches courses in biostatistics, serves on dissertation committees, is a Rural Medicine clerkship director for the Rural Medical Scholars Program and provides faculty support for the Leadership in Community Medicine and Population Health course for the College’s Tuscaloosa Longitudinal Community Curriculum medical education program. Leeper also directs the academic and evaluation aspects of the pre-matriculation year for Rural Medical Scholars and supports research efforts of Rural Medical Scholars, medical students, residents and faculty. Leeper received a PhD in biostatistics from the University of Iowa and has been with the College since 1977. He is a fellow of the American Statistical Association. He has received The University of Alabama Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award, the Statistics Section Award from the American Public Health Association and the Outstanding Alumni Award from the College of Public Health at the University of Iowa. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers and has served on more than 200 dissertation committees at UA.
