John R. Wheat, MD — Professor

John R. Wheat, MD, MPH, is a professor of Family, Internal, and Rural Medicine. Wheat provides clinical services in Internal and Occupational Medicine at University Medical Center, which the College operates. Wheat received his bachelor’s degree from The University of Alabama, his medical degree from the UA School of Medicine and his Master's of Public Health degree from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He completed his residency at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, Minn., and the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program/Preventive Medicine Residency and a post-doctoral program in Epidemiology at UNC-Chapel Hill. Wheat received the Alabama Public Health Association’s Ira L. Myers Award, the Alabama Family Practice Rural Health Board’s Extraordinary Commitment to Family Medicine Award in Alabama, and was elected to the Alabama Health Care Hall of Fame.
