Education and Training

Clinical teaching, mentorship and scholarship across stages of training

The Department of Family, Internal, and Rural Medicine connects medical student and resident education, post-residency fellowship training and rural medicine education pathways. Medical students, resident physicians and fellows learn through supervised patient care in clinics and hospital settings, supported by faculty physician teaching, feedback, mentorship and scholarship. Family medicine and internal medicine comprise the department’s medical student clerkships.

By the Numbers

The College’s 2025 education report records 48 family medicine residents in training. The chair identifies five post-residency fellowships within FIRM and two medical student clerkships. Program ownership and the five-fellowship count need reconciliation with the seven pathways listed in the official fellowship directory.
