Investigating and preventing the opioid crisis topic of Rural Health Conference

March 31, 2023

The opioid crisis is a serious public health issue in the United States as overdoses kill nearly 47,000 people a year, and few strategies have been developed to address the epidemic

The 2023 Annual Rural Health Conference, to be held April 12-13 at the Bryant Conference Center in Tuscaloosa, will focus on the opioid crisis and is titled “Turn the Tide: Preventing, Treating and Investigating the Opioid Crisis.” The conference is hosted by The University of Alabama Institute for Rural Health Research, which is part of the UA College of Community Health Sciences.

An opioid can be a prescription drug, often referred to as painkillers, or an illicit substance, such as heroin.

Conference keynote speakers are Steve Marshall, Alabama’s attorney general; Bridget Brenna, New York City’s special narcotics prosecutor; Kim Boswell, commissioner of the Alabama Department of Mental Health; and Dr. Stephen Loyd, associate professor of medicine at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tenn., and medical director of JourneyPure at the River & Cedar Recovery Center. Breakout sessions will cover such topics as substance use disorders, drug data research and controlled substances updates.

Conference registration includes access to all conference events, presentations and keynote lectures, breakfast, lunch and coffee and beverages.

Costs are $150 for professional attendees for both conference days, and $50 for students. The one-day registration rate is $100 for professionals and $30 for students. Registration by credit card is available online here.

Held annually, the Rural Health Conference brings together health care professionals, community leaders, researchers, government officials and policymakers who hear from speakers in the field and share information and knowledge about rural health issues, as well as solutions to address those issues.

The Institute for Rural Health Research works to bring the highest attainable standard of health to rural citizens pursuing this mission through the combined strength of scientific knowledge, community involvement and informed public policy.
