Larry Mayes Endowed Scholarship
The Larry Mayes Endowed Scholarship is awarded annually to medical students at the University of Alabama School of Medicine – Tuscaloosa Regional Campus (UA College of Community Health Sciences) who elect a community medicine experience in a medically underserved setting in the United States or abroad during their third or fourth year of medical school.
Larry Mayes was an outstanding member of the Class of 1986 of the University of Alabama School of Medicine who died while on an elective rotation in Africa during his senior year. Larry’s family and friends created a scholarship fund in his memory to promote a broader understanding of international health care and of the health needs in underserved areas of the United States.
Eligibility: Rising third- or fourth-year medical students at the University of Alabama School of Medicine are eligible for this scholarship. Priority is given to applicants from the Tuscaloosa Regional Campus (UA College of Community Health Sciences) and to applicants whose training and career goals align most closely with the College’s mission of primary care.
Amount: $1,000 to $2,000 annually (given as travel reimbursement)
Application Due Date: September 29, 2017
