Pickens County Community Resource Guide – 2019

This guide was created as part of The University of Alabama-Pickens County Partnership to connect Pickens County residents with the many available resources in Aliceville, Carrollton, Gordo and Reform. This is the only community-based resource guide for Pickens County.

The UA-Pickens County Partnership seeks to provide sustainable health care for Pickens County and real world training for UA students in medicine, nursing, social work, psychology, health education and other disciplines.

Creative Kids Daycare

This childcare facility is open to children birth-12 years old. Creative Kids offers bus pick up/drop off to and from elementary school and/or Head Start preschool. Call for more information about cost and availability.

This childcare facility is open to children ages 6 weeks-12 years old. Little Waves offers bus pick up/drop off to and from elementary school and/or Head Start preschool. Call for more information about cost and availability.

Community Resources & Social Services

Area Agency on Aging

Housed in the Aging and Disability Resource Center, the Area Agency on Aging provides referral services to various programs to assist and aid the elderly and disabled populations. When contacting the clinic, ask for intake and a caseworker will screen for program/service eligibility.

Gordo Oaklane Community Center

Gordo Oaklane Community Center (GOCC) provides a variety of programming and services for children and youth (ages 5-18 years). GOCC partners with students and volunteers to provide after school tutoring as needed. GOCC also provides free summer programming (childcare) that includes lunch, reading, and recreation activities. Park Cameron

Park Cameron is a resource center for the residents of Aliceville’s Housing Authority. During the school year, Park Cameron offers an after school-program, where children can receive homework tutoring and participate in arts and crafts. Park Cameron also offers summer programs for children and hosts many other classes and programs such as parenting classes, resident meetings, and other activities throughout the year.

Pickens County Community Action Agency

Pickens County Community Action Committee works to mobilize resources in an effort to eliminate poverty and improve the quality of life for the disadvantaged and low income resident of Pickens County, Alabama. All programs offered are listed online and all programs offered through Community Action are on a “first come, first served” basis. Community Action Agency can also assist with referrals for housing and/or food needs.

Pickens County Department of Human Resources

Providing resources to all residents of Pickens County, this department allocates government funded assistance in many areas, such as:

Report suspicion of child and/or elder abuse or neglect to the number listed above. All reports will be kept anonymous.

Pickens County Extension Office

The Pickens County Extension Office offers educational programs in agriculture, nutrition, forestry, and consumer science. The extension office aids in the 4H afterschool programs and various community resource development.

United Way

United Way provides resources and assistance on a wide variety of issues from birth to death. Some programs include: prescription discounts, Medicaid/Medicare assistance, employment assistance, parenting classes, monetary help, school supplies and resources for education for grandparents that raise children, and much more. Call the 211 hotline to learn if there is a program to help whatever issue you or your family may be facing.

Primary/Family care that provides health services for medicaid recipients and uninsured patients, such as women’s health care, pediatric care, nutrition, HIV/AIDS services, mental health services, pharmacy assistance programs, and eye care (once a month). To receive services, provide proof of income (within last 30 days).

Pickens County Family Resource Center

The Pickens County Family Resource Center works to provide resources and education to all people of Pickens County to help decrease the effects of poverty. The Center aims to provide help and aid wherever possible to empower and encourage the low-income and those in-need. Call for more information.

Pickens County Health Department

Clinical health services offered for all children, family planning, and women’s health needs. Services include health education, information resources, free and confidential STD testing, Medicaid enrollment, vaccinations, Medicaid Assistance Programs (MAPS), clinical laboratory testing, fee income schedule, and WIC.


 

Disability Services

Ability Alliance of West Alabama

Regional organization that provides assistance and case management to people with intellectual disabilities by helping make quality services available. Ability Alliance of West Alabama serves as the entry point into the Alabama Department of Mental Health’s Intellectual Disability Division through case management and an evaluation to determine eligibility. Provides transportation for employment purposes through the “Together We Ride” program.

Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services

State-run institution that offers services to children and adults with disabilities. Operates in four main areas: Early intervention for those disabled from birth – 3 years old, children’s rehab provide services from birth – 21 years old, vocational rehab works with those 18 years and older to help find employment; and Homebound services that aid the most severely disabled. Alabama Disabilities Advocacy Programs (ADAP)

Offers services to people living with disabilities within Alabama to help promote a higher quality of life and protect, promote, and expand their rights. Particular services include: training for consumers, family members, and professional groups about disability rights issues; answer technical issues and provide referrals on rights issues; and advocacy services for those eligible within the seven programs offered. ADAP does intake over the phone and can travel to recipients homes if necessary.

Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind

The Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) provides comprehensive education, rehabilitation, service, and employment programs for children/adults who are deaf, blind, DeafBlind, and multi-disabled, as well as their families. This is carried out through schools serving children, ages 3 – 21 from across the state, an education and rehabilitation program for adults ages 16 and older, an industrial, manufacturing complex, and a network of eight statewide regional centers. All services are free for those who qualify.

Community Service Program of West Alabama

Early intervention is provided for children from birth – 3 years with a developmental delay and/or diagnosis. Services provided to children that qualify include: speech and occupational therapy, physical therapy, and service coordination.

Easter Seals West Alabama

Easter Seals works to improve the lives of the disabled and the general public’s perception of disability through various programs. All programs offered by Easter Seals are listed online.


 

Domestic Violence Resources

Turning Point

Turning Point offers services to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. The organization offers court advocacy within Pickens County to victims in the legal process. Turning Point offers emergency shelter, individual counseling, support groups, SAIL program for individuals wanting to leave a violent home, 24-hour crisis line, skills groups for job training and aid in pursuing education, children’s services, and other referrals in Tuscaloosa. All Turning Point services are offered free to Pickens County residents.

Bevill State Community College (BSCC)

Bevill State Community College has an instructional site, Pickens County Educational Center, in Carrollton, AL. BSCC offers various technical degrees, associates degrees in health science fields, and classes that can transfer to four-year institutions. The college also provides services that can be used by Pickens County community members, even if not enrolled at BSCC, at no cost. These include:

Dolly Parton Imagination Library

This program, offered through United Way, delivers new books once a month to children until they are 5 years old. This program is free to the residents of Pickens County.

Head Start Program

A comprehensive early childhood growth and development program from the Alabama Department of Human Services designed to provide children from low-income communities and those with special needs tools to effectively compete with counterparts in the next education placement. Services are provided for 3-5 year-old children that include screenings for development and behavior, health and safety, social and emotional health, nutrition, and others. Contact in spring/summer for enrollment opportunities.

Pickens Academy

Private, Christian school located in Carrollton, AL, offering accredited education for Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. Prices and enrollment can be found online.

Pickens County Board of Education

Pickens County College and Career Center

The Pickens County College and Career Center offers technical and advanced education for high school students in the county. Students have the opportunity to explore career options and can earn advanced diplomas and college credit. Classes are offered in the areas of:

Pickens County Family Resource Center

The center offers various education opportunities for community members, including: fatherhood classes, senior education, workforce development classes, STARS after school programs for teaching life skills, and motherhood classes housed at the Alabama Department of Human Resources. Classes are held at locations around the county. Call for more information.

Reform Elementary

Youthbuild Program

Youthbuild is a program offered to low-income 16-24 year-olds to provide pathway to obtaining their GED, while earning real world job skill training by building or renovating homes in their community, and also learning leadership traits. This training program is meant to lead to employment or college.


 

Senior Citizen Resources

Aliceville Manor

Full-service nursing home in Aliceville, AL, Aliceville Manor houses a memory care unit for seniors with memory deterioration, respite care for seniors living with a caregiver, palliative care, wound care, hospice, social services, and daily social activities. Aliceville Manor also provides a 21-day rehabilitation unit, and acute care in an inpatient clinic. The clinic aids individuals in transitioning back to independent living after a hospital visit, surgery and/or an accident via referral by physician or case manager.

Arbor Woods Health and Rehabilitation

Specializes in long-term care services and short-term rehabilitation. Long-term nursing care and therapy provides assistance with activities of daily living to keep residents functioning at their highest possible level. Arbor Woods also offers a rehab center for short-term nursing and rehabilitation services to help patients regain independence and return home quickly.

Area Agency on Aging

The Area Agency on Aging provides referral services to various programs to assist and aid the elderly and disabled populations. Upon contacting the agency, ask for intake and a caseworker will screen for programs/services eligibility. Programs and resources can be found at westalabamaaging.org/benefits-services.

Elder Law Clinic

Provides free legal advice, legal assistance, and legal counsel to individuals 60 years and older. There is no income qualification for use of services. Visit the website for further information on various elder law topics and services offered.

Pickens County Medical Center Geriatric Psychiatric Services

A 10-bed, inpatient unit caring for anyone 55 years and older with mental health and behavioral issues in a safe and secure setting. Medicaid, Medicare, and most insurance plans are accepted. Call for more information about referrals.

Red Cross Project Share

Red Cross Project Share provides financial assistance for heating and cooling to the elderly and disabled. This service is offered through the Community Action Agency. Contact the agency to sign up for services. Program availability is limited.

Sansing County Home

Sansing Country Home is a 14-room private senior living community. Contact for availability.

Senior Activity Centers

Four Locations:

Weekly gatherings throughout the county that provide lunch at a low cost ($1.25) and activities such as bingo, education, and varying celebrations. Lunch is delivered to seniors who are physically unable to travel to the senior center. Meals are delivered Monday-Friday.

Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program

Provides coupons to seniors who are 60 years and older that can be exchanged for food at farmers markets, roadside stands, and community-supported agriculture programs. See website for eligibility and enrollment information.

Senior Nutrition Program

This program is offered monthly through the senior center activity centers located throughout the county. Brown bags with various types of foods are distributed to participating seniors. Sign up at local senior centers.

American Red Cross

Phone line is open 24/7 to report natural and manmade disasters (ex. a singly family home fire). Red Cross provides local volunteers to assist with disasters, and provide access to emergency communication to an active military family member who is deployed. Red Cross is actively seeking volunteers for its emergency response teams. Call the phone line for more information.

CodeRED Alert System

CodeRED is an alert system that notifies Pickens County residents of emergency situations such as severe weather, evacuation notices, and missing child reports. Visit the link listed above to sign up for alerts.

Employment Services

Easter Seals West Alabama

Easter Seals provides workforce development to individuals with disabilities that is designed to prepare them for work. The Vocational Services Program closes the gap between disabled and non-disabled individuals to create and sustain a workforce that can support current and future business and industry. The Supported Employment Program is offered to the more severely disabled to provide one-on-one, on-site training to teach skills needed for the job.

Pickens County Community Action

Pickens County Community Action has a job board at the Carrollton office with an updated list of all available jobs it has access to. The organization also post job listings on its Facebook page, “Pickens County Community Action Committee.”

Pickens County Department of Human Resources

The JOBS program at the Department of Human Resources can provide referrals to the career center for workforce education.

Pickens County Family Resource Center

The Pickens County Family Resource Center (FRC) offers various programs to assist with employment and employment education. The FRC hosts Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) to help women with jobs and job placement, specifically at Park Cameron Resource Center. The FRC also works through TANF to help individuals who have recently been released from the corrections department find jobs and begin the process of employment. Finally, the FRC works through the CFTL program to aid residents with resume building, helping them to get on Alabama job sites, and refers to employment agencies.


 

Food and clothing assistance

Aliceville First United Methodist Church

The Lord’s Pantry is hosted once a month. Eligibility to access the pantry is based on household size and income. To use, bring proof of income and photo ID the day the food pantry is open. Call number listed above for more information on eligibility.

GiGi’s Gallery Soup Kitchen Soup

Soup kitchen open to all members of the Pickens County community. Soup is provided by members of Carrollton Methodist Church.

Gordo First United Methodist Church

This food pantry provides canned goods and some perishable items such as milk and, occasionally, meat to families in need. Open to Gordo residents only.

Pickens Baptist Association

The thrift store is open Wednesday – Saturday to all Pickens County residents and includes clothing and household items. A food bank is also available for association members only. The Baptist Association also provides aid to people who have lost their homes due to fire or storm damage on a case-by-case basis. Call for further details.

Pickens County Community Action Agency

Through the FEMA food assistance project, Community Action has resources for families and individuals with emergencies and are in need of food. Individuals are handled on a case-by-case basis. Pickens County Community Action also hosts various food trucks throughout the year. Call for food truck schedule.

The Pot Luck Shop

Pot Luck Shop is a thrift store that offers adult clothing and shoes for $1.00 and children’s clothing and shoes for $0.25. Pot Luck also offers donations to families in need on a case-by-case basis.

Caring Hands Hospice

Full range hospice care for a variety of illnesses. Caring Hands Hospice offers routine home care, inpatient care at a facility, respite care, and continuous care at home or partner facility. Nursing staff, home health, social work, and physicians work together to coordinate care. Can be referred through physician or through family. Accepts Medicaid and Medicare.

West Alabama Hospice

Provides care to terminally-ill patients through physician referrals. In-home care is provided as needed. Inpatient care can be provided short-term. Accepts Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance. Provides grief therapy for families and children as well.

Libraries

Aliceville Public Library

The Aliceville Public Library offers free computer access, free wifi, and office services at a minimal fee in addition to normal book, video, and audiobook rental services. The library offers resume writing and job application help as well as educational resources. The library hosts children’s activities throughout the year and a summer day camp.

Carrollton Public Library

The Carrollton Public Library offers membership to any Pickens County resident with a name, address, and phone number on file. The library provides books, DVDs, and VHS videos for rent. The library also provides computers for patron use and office services at a minimal fee. A conference room is available for public and private meetings. The library offers a summer reading program for children age 12 and under.

Libraries host seasonal classes and workshops on various topics. Contact or visit your local library for more information.

Pickens County Cooperative Library

The Pickens County Cooperative Library (PCCL) operates as an administrative assistant to the county’s four other libraries. The PCCL also hosts an adult literacy program to aid in improving reading skills through computer programs and individualized instruction. The library houses a large print materials collection available for nursing home residents.

Reform Public Library

To rent books, DVDs, or audiobooks, contact library staff upon visiting. This library offers computers for patron use and a conference room available for public and private meetings. Office services are also offered at a minimal charge.

Ruth Holliman Public Library

The Ruth Holliman Public Library offers membership to individuals with a valid address, occupation, driver’s license (or other identification), and phone number. This library offers storytime for preschool age children on Tuesdays at 10:30am throughout the year (except for August). This library has computers available for patron use and office services for a minimal cost.

Pickens County Medical Center is a hospital located in Carrollton, AL, offering a variety of special services, including a 24-hour Emergency Room, cardiology, geriatric psychiatry, sleep studies, swing bed program, rehabilitation, and many other specialty services. Amedisys is a home health agency that provides personal care, hospice, and home health care. Amedisys provides physical, occupational, and speech therapy, as well as nursing and social work services, nutritional education, wound and diabetes care, COPD, and pain therapy. Amedisys also provides home health aides for assistance with personal care. Accepts Medicare.

American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society will provide transportation to cancer treatment, call number above to be matched with a volunteer. Call four days in advance to set up transportation date and time. For other resources and questions, call (205) 758-0700.

American Social Health Association STI Hotline

The Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Resource Center Hotline is available to answer STI questions on topics such as transmission risk reduction, prevention, testing, and treatment.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Hotline

Call for additional information about diseases and general health information, vaccines and immunizations, international travel health information, work safety questions, reporting toxic environment violations, birth and death certificates, and other health-related questions.

Five Horizons Health Services (formerly West Alabama HIV/AIDS Outreach)

Five Horizons Health Services provides case management services, prevention education, free oral HIV testing, and advocacy services. Five Horizons offers free presentations to community organizations that would like to host HIV/AIDS prevention education. Five Horizons also offers PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis), Hep C treatment, STD/STI treatment, and Hispanic services. Testing services are free and confidential, no appointment necessary. Mental Health Resources

Indian Rivers Mental Health Center

Indian Rivers Mental Health Center treats a variety of diagnoses, including: ADHD, depression, anxiety, thought, mood and psychotic disorders, substance abuse, and developmental disabilities. Indian Rivers provides individual and family therapy, case management, and basic living skills training for individuals with disabilities.

Community Service Program of West Alabama

The Community Service Program of West Alabama (CSPWA) provides case management to residents of Pickens County to help connect individuals and families with resources to be self-sufficient. CSPWA provides early intervention services for children birth to 3 years with developmental delays, and weatherization for homes to help lower energy costs. See website for application details.

Compassionate Friends

Tuscaloosa chapter hosts a monthly grief support group for parents, siblings, and family who have lost a child. Group meets on the second Monday of the month at 6:30pm. Personalized grief packets can be found on the website for no charge to help families that have recently lost a child.

Felony ID Card and Ex-Felon laws

If you have two or more felonies, or if you are a sex offender, you must register with the sheriff’s department every time you change county of residence.


 

Parenting Education

Easter Seals West Alabama

Easter Seals provides education for parents with children who have disabilities, including information, support, and encouragement to parents in need. The program supports a parent’s role in promoting school readiness and healthy development of children.

Family Resource Center

The Family Resource Center offers fatherhood classes for fathers that wish to participate. Classes cover a variety of paternal skills. The Center also offers motherhood classes at the Department of Human Resources. Call for more information and how to get involved.

Pickens County Health Department

The Pickens County Health Department helps enrollment for WIC, a supplemental nutrition program for children under 5 years and their mothers. The Health Department also helps provide family planning services to residents of Pickens County.

Pickens County Solid Waste

Pickens County residents can drop off recycling in Carrollton at the landfill (address listed above). In Gordo, Reform, and Aliceville, recycling can be dropped near each city hall in the appropriate bins. Accepts cardboard, mixed paper, and plastics #1 and #2.

Aliceville City Park

City park is free to use for all residents. To rent a pavilion, call City Hall at (205) 373-6611.

Aliceville Walking Track

Located behind City Hall, this track is open to the public at all hours. Four laps around the track is one mile.

Gordo City Park

City park is free to use for all residents.

Pickens County Medical Center Healthplex

Offers personal training, weight-loss programs, beginner exercise programs, exercise programs, aerobics classes, PACE (People with Arthritis Can Exercise) classes, indoor heated pool, sauna, racquetball court, indoor walking track, cardio area, and weight room.

Pickensville Campground

Campground contains 176 sites, boat ramp, restrooms, laundry facilities, picnic shelter, and nature trails. Two-lane boat ramp and 75 parking spaces. Call for availability and price.

Tenn-Tom Waterway & Tom Bevill Visitor Center

The Tenn-Tom Waterway offers a place to fish, boat, picnic, and enjoy the outdoors. The Tom Bevill Visitor Center offers beautiful views of the waterway and free admission to the visitor center to learn about life on the Tenn-Tom Waterway. The visitor center has a playground and picnic area for public use.

Bradford Health Services

Bradford Health Services provides a variety of treatment and rehabilitation services for addictions and dependencies on drugs and alcohol. Bradford provides treatments for adults and adolescents. Call number listed above for more information.

Alcoholics Anonymous Meetings held weekly on Wednesdays at noon and are open to anyone.

Celebrating Recovery

Aliceville

Reform

Celebrating Recovery is a weekly support group for individuals recovering from addiction and substance abuse. Meetings are open to the public.

Indian Rivers Mental Health Center

Indian Rivers provides outpatient and inpatient recovery programs to help overcome substance abuse issues. Indian Rivers offers a variety of types of treatments including therapy, case management, and treatment.

Transportation Services

Alabama Medicaid Non-Emergency Transportation (NET) Program

You must be a Medicaid recipient. Provides free rides to doctor appointments. Rides must be scheduled at least five days prior to the appointment, and the appointment attended must also be paid for by Medicaid. This service accommodates wheelchair transportation and non-emergency ambulance transportation.

Cost: $1 for anyone 60 years and older
$2 for anyone 59 and younger

Help Inc. Transportation is a service available to residents of Pickens County for travel within the county to places such as: grocery stores, bill paying trips, doctor appointments, work, and more. Must call and schedule at least one day prior to transit.

Kid One Transportation

Kid One Transportation provides transportation for pregnant mothers and children under the age of 19 years (excluding WIC and orthodontist appointments) who do not have access or ability to transport themselves to mental, dental and/or medical doctor appointments. Veterans Administrations

The VA provides the Veteran’s Transportation Services (VTS) to ensure that qualifying veterans have access to care through reliable and safe transportation. This service is for medical appointments at the Tuscaloosa or Birmingham VA center. Must call in advance to schedule.

Alabama Business Charitable Trust

The Alabama Business Charitable Trust (ABCT) works to educate low income Alabamians on how to live energy efficient and cut down on energy costs. The ABCT also provides funds to families in dire need of aid to help pay energy bills. This service is offered through the Pickens County Community Action.

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) assists low income households, particularly those that pay a high proportion of income for home energy, in meeting immediate home energy needs. Crisis assistance requires that one household member have a documented health problem and require a controlled environment. This service is offered by Community Action Agency.
