The College of Community Health Sciences partners with the West Central Alabama AHEC to provide scholastic-year programs at high schools in West Alabama.
The West Central Alabama AHEC is part of the Alabama Statewide Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Program, which shares the College’s mission of expanding the health care workforce in the state, especially in rural and underserved communities, to increase access to care and improve the health of communities.
The College’s rural scholastic-year programs – Health Careers 101 and the after-school Health Professions Academy – are coordinated by the West Alabama AHEC and are offered at five high schools in West Alabama.
Health Careers 101 provides health career exploration workshops. The Health Professions Academy provides students with preparation for the ACT college entrance exam, college and career exploration, work toward certification in phlebotomy and tours of local hospitals.
