August 5, 2019

The University of Alabama College of Community Health Sciences sent representatives from the UA Family Medicine Residency to the American Academy of Family Physicians National Conference for Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students. This event is the largest recruiting opportunity in America for medical students and residents.

The event, held in Kansas City, Missouri, has drawn more than 1,000 residents and 1,500 medical students every year for the past three years. The College sent 18 faculty and staff to promote the UA Family Medicine Residency, which it operates, the College and the University for this year’s conference.FMR Recruits at AAFP

“The 2019 AAFP National Conference was an amazing experience,” said Anthony Johnson, a third-year resident with the UA Family Medicine Residency. “It felt inspiring to be surrounded by physicians from all over the country with the common goal of primary care.”

Targeted social media posts, unique “taste of the South” promotional items and energetic conversations with the CCHS exhibitors showcased the residency and fellowships available to the conference attendees.

Between July 25-27 the CCHS team worked to stand out among 591 exhibitors at the conference.

“It was an incredibly productive recruiting trip,” said Nathan Boles, a second-year resident with the UA Family Medicine Residency. “We were able to speak with many awesome residents and students, many of which showed strong interest in our residency program and fellowships. We hope to see some of the those same faces this upcoming year for interviews.”

The success of the event will be measured in the coming months as applications to the residency and fellowships are received. The College anticipates that this will be another strong group of applicants to continue the legacy of the UA Family Medicine Residency.
