Dr. Martha Crowther, associate dean for research for the College of Community Health Sciences, received the T.J. McCallum Gerodiversity Award. The award is given to a psychologist who advances clinical practice, training, research, advocacy and/or public policy for underrepresented older adults, including ethnic and racial minorities, women, sexual orientation minorities and older adults living with a disability. Crowther’s nominator for the award, a former mentee, emphasized her “outstanding leadership and tireless efforts in addressing and raising awareness about issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion …” Crowther is also a practicing psychologist and professor of community medicine and population health and family, internal, and rural medicine for the College. She has been honored by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities as a Health Disparities Scholar and as a National Role Model Award recipient given to a faculty member seeking to address social issues. Crowther’s research grants and publications demonstrate a career-long dedication to understanding and ameliorating health and mental health disparities, particularly among older African Americans in the Deep South.
