Dr. Alan Blum, founder and director of The University of Alabama Center for the Study of Tobacco and Society, released a new online exhibition that features 300 old advertisements that once appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). The exhibition is titled “Diabetic Bread, Goat Milk Formula, Soda, Sun Lamps, and Cigarettes,” and shows how, for decades, JAMA published ads for medications right alongside promotions for products that weren’t always healthy, like soda, candy, cigarettes, and even alcohol. The exhibition can be found on the center’s website. The center is housed within CCHS.
