Two family medicine physicians seeking additional skills in obstetrics began their training as part of the Family Medicine-Obstetrics Fellowship at the College of Community Health Sciences.
Drs. Rachel Butler-Sarvaunt and Schae Hanson started their fellowships in July.
The Family Medicine-Obstetrics Fellowship is a one-year program created to address the need for obstetrics in rural and remote areas of Alabama. Fellows are supervised in hospital and clinic settings by full-time faculty who are board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and family medicine obstetrics. Fellows also receive education and training in instrumental and operative obstetrics, Cesarean sections, ultrasound, colposcopy, cryotherapy and endometrial biopsies.
Butler-Sarvaunt received her medical degree from the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Auburn, Ala., and completed her residency at The University of Alabama Tuscaloosa Family Medicine Residency Program, which is operated by CCHS.
Hanson received her medical degree from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion and completed her residency in family medicine at the Clarkson Family Medicine Residency Program at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.
Upon completion of the fellowship, fellows are prepared to meet the requirements for board certification in family medicine obstetrics.
