Dr. Lea Yerby, associate professor of community medicine and population health at CCHS, received funding from the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education for her project, “Expanding Access to Early Autism Services in Alabama: Strengthening Community Expertise.” The project aims to enhance statewide autism services by building local expertise and increasing access for young children. The funding will support the initiative through December 2027.
Several medical educators at CCHS are recipients of the UAB Heersink School of Medicine 2025 Argus Awards. Nominated and voted on by medical students, the Argus Awards recognize outstanding faculty, residents, community preceptors and departments in various categories.
In its role as a regional campus of the Heersink School of Medicine, CCHS provides the third and fourth years of clinical education and training to a portion of medical students.
CCHS Argus Award recipients for this year are:
- Best Clinical Clerkship – Psychiatry
- Best Community-Based Educator – Dr. Julie Taylor, an OB/GYN in Pell City, Ala., and a community preceptor for CCHS medical students
- Best Resident Educator – Dr. Justine Vella, a third-year family medicine resident
- Best Clinical Educator – Dr. Bliss Wright, assistant professor in the CCHS Department of Family, Internal, and Rural Medicine and the CCHS Department of Pediatrics
