45th Anniversary of the UA Family Medicine Residency

February 4, 2020

This year marks the 45th anniversary of The University of Alabama Family Medicine Residency (formerly the Tuscaloosa Family Medicine Residency). To mark the occasion, the College of Community Health Sciences, which operates the residency, will host an alumni reunion weekend August 28-30, 2020.

The reunion will be held in Tuscaloosa and will include a welcome dinner, Continuing Medical Education activities, a gala and awards dinner and a farewell brunch. The weekend event will provide opportunities for alumni to reconnect and reminisce with old friends and former classmates and learn how the residency and College have grown since they graduated.

Now with 48 physicians training each year, the UA Family Medicine Residency is the third largest in the U.S., and one of the oldest. As of 2019, a total of 509 family medicine physicians have graduated from the residency. A vast majority, 89%, are practicing in the Southeast and slightly more than half are practicing in Alabama, including in the state’s rural areas. In fact, 1 in 7 family medicine physicians currently practicing in the state graduated from the UA Family Medicine Residency.
