A paper co-authored by Dr. Dan Avery, professor emeritus at The University of Alabama College of Community Health Sciences, was chosen as the STFM Research Paper of the Year. The award also acknowledges Dr. James Leeper, a biostatistician and professor emeritus at the College. The paper is titled “Who REALLY goes into primary care? Contributions of U.S. medical schools to primary care (2003-2014). “Hopefully, this recognition will bring more publicity to the issue of how schools count their primary care output,” said Dr. Mark Deutchman, a co-author and associate dean for Rural Health at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
Dr. Martha Crowther, associate dean for Research and Health Policy for The University of Alabama College of Community Health Sciences, provided a keynote address Feb. 11 at the Alabama Association of Higher Education Diversity Officers annual conference. Her presentation was titled Self Preservation: An Act of Warfare. Crowther is also an investigator in the College’s Institute for Rural Health Research, a scientist at the UAB Integrative Center for Aging Research, and a practicing psychologist at University Medical Center, which CCHS operates.
Dr. Tom Weida, University Medical Center’s chief medical officer and a practicing family physician, was selected as a 2021 Castle Connolly Top Doctor. UMC is operated by The University of Alabama College of Community Health Sciences. For more than 25 years, Castle Connolly has created a list of the nation’s top doctors based on recommendations from fellow physicians. Castle Connolly’s physician-led research team screens nominations. The list covers all 50 states and all major specialties. The information is intended to provide consumers with information when they are seeking medical care.
