Medical students match into residencies

Thirty-two UAB Heersink School of Medicine students who completed their clinical education at UA’s College of Community Health Sciences were selected for residency programs across the country.

CCHS serves as a regional campus of the Heersink School of Medicine in the education of medical students, and clinical education consists of the third and fourth years of medical school. Residency programs provide specialized training for medical school graduates.

Eighteen of the students will train in residencies in Alabama, and four of those students will train at the UA Tuscaloosa Family Medicine Residency Program, which is operated by the College.

The students learned of their residency placements during a commemorative event in March with the release of the National Resident Matching Program results. The students graduate in May and begin their residency training in July.

The medical students matched into residencies in 12 states: Texas, Washington, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Colorado, Illinois, Tennessee, Arkansas, Maryland, Pennsylvania and California.

The students matched into nine different residency specialties: six into family medicine, four each into neurology, psychiatry and obstetrics and gynecology, and two each into internal medicine and general surgery. In addition, one student each matched into residencies in anesthesiology, urology, orthopaedic surgery, pathology, radiation oncology and internal medicine-pediatrics.
