Daniel M. Avery, Jr., MD, FACOG, FACS, is Professor Emeritus. He also serves as Medical Laboratory Director and Medical Review Officer for University Medical Center, which the College operates, and as Division Chief of Pathology. In addition, he is professor of Community Medicine and Population Health and Obstetrics and Gynecology, and is Medical Director for the College’s Institute for Rural Health Research.
Avery received a medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in 1982. Following residency training in Anatomical and Clinical Pathology at UAB, he completed an OB/GYN residency at Carraway Methodist Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama, and a fellowship in Addiction Medicine at UAB.
Avery is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Gynecologic Endoscopy, Forensic Medicine and Family Medicine Obstetrics. He has held numerous positions teaching medical students and resident physicians. He was in private practice for 20 years before joining the College.
