Assistant Dean Undergraduate Medical Education


Dr. Grier Stewart is assistant dean for Undergraduate Medical Education and associate professor in the Department of Family, Internal, and Rural Medicine at the College of Community Health Sciences.

In his role as assistant dean, Stewart supervises UAB Heersink School of Medicine students who are completing their clinical education and training at the College, which also serves as a regional campus of the Heersink School of Medicine. Stewart also cares for patients at University Medical Center, which is operated by CCHS.

Stewart has an interest in geriatrics and long-term care and serves as medical director at Forest Manor Nursing Home in Tuscaloosa. He also attends the inpatient medicine service at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa.

Stewart received his bachelor’s degree from Davidson College in North Carolina, his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham and completed his internal medicine residency training at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C.

Stewart is a member of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama and the Alabama Medical Directors' Association, serving as its president in 2016-17. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians. He has practiced medicine in Tuscaloosa for more than 25 years and serves on numerous hospital and community boards and committees.
