Earl Ray Stewart, MD

Clinical Associate Professor

Dr. Ray Stewart is a clinical associate professor with the Department of Family, Internal, and Rural Medicine at the College of Community Health Sciences. He is also director of the Dr. Bill DeShazo Sports Medicine Clinic at University Medical Center, which the College operates. Stewart graduated from The University of Alabama, magna cum laude, in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in biology. He was accepted into the UA Rural Medical Scholars Program in 2002. Prior to entering medical school, he earned master's degrees in biology and health studies in 2003. He graduated from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in 2007 and completed his residency training at the UA Tuscaloosa Family Medicine Residency Program in 2010. He served as a chief resident from 2009 to 2010.

After residency graduation, Stewart was selected as the first fellow for the Dr. Patrick Trammell Excellence in Sports Medicine Program at UA. After completion of his fellowship in 2011, he entered private practice in Gordo, Ala., for four years. He previously served as team physician for Sipsey Valley High School (2011-2022), Pickens County High School (2011-2015), Aliceville High School (2011-2015), and Stillman College (2011-2015).

Stewart returned to CCHS in 2016 as an assistant professor in the department of Family, Internal Medicine, and Rural Medicine. He currently serves as the clinic director for sports medicine and program director for the primary care sports medicine fellowship. In addition, he is the medical director for the University athletics program and head team physician for football and women’s basketball.
