Brussels Sprout Challenge Marks Fifth Year

April 1, 2019

Hundreds of walkers participated in University Medical Center’s annual Brussels Sprout Challenge March 2, eating one of the cruciferous vegetables at each mile of the 3.1 mile walk and helping to promote healthy lifestyle choices.

This was the fifth year that UMC, which is operated by the College of Community Health Sciences, offered the Brussels Sprout Challenge in partnership with the American Heart Association’s West Alabama Heart Walk and Manna Grocery and Deli in Tuscaloosa.

UMC has incorporated the challenge into the Heart Walk to encourage healthy diets, along with exercise, which also complements the American Heart Association’s mission to build healthier lives free of heart disease and stroke. Manna Grocery and Deli prepares and donates the Brussels sprouts served at the walk. Brussels sprouts have high levels of many nutrients and provide numerous health benefits.

More than 600 people participated in this year’s Brussels Sprout Challenge. Those who completed the challenge received a t-shirt, Brussels sprout recipes and information about the health benefits of Brussels sprouts at the end of the walk.

The West Alabama Heart Walk began at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater and continued along the downtown Riverwalk.

The mission of UMC and the College is to improve and promote the health of individuals and communities in Alabama and the region.
