Pediatrics

Pediatrics Department faculty are committed to providing superior education and clinical training opportunities for medical students and family medicine residents while delivering the highest quality of care for young patients.

Our department hosts third- and fourth-year UAB Heersink School of Medicine students for rotations in outpatient and inpatient pediatrics. We provide in-depth exposure to general pediatrics and offer unique opportunities to learn about trauma-focused care, school-based care for children with special health needs, and pediatric behavioral health. We also direct a Heersink School of Medicine Evidence Based Medicine in Pediatrics elective that is offered to medical students from all four medical school campuses (Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Huntsville and Montgomery). We advise medical students applying for pediatric residency training and have a history of success with our students matching at some of the top residency programs for pediatrics in the country. Many of our former students have gone on to serve as chief residents at their programs.

The University of Alabama Tuscaloosa Family Medicine Residency Program resident physicians receive pediatrics training throughout the three-year program. Residents work with our pediatricians in the outpatient clinical setting, the emergency department, the newborn nursery and in the pediatric inpatient unit. These experiences provide training in managing a vast array of clinical diagnoses, in addition to preventive care. Diagnoses frequently encountered include: premature infant, behavior and developmental concerns, ADHD, asthma, overweight/obesity, sickle cell disease and acute illnesses like croup, otitis media and febrile illness.

Faculty research interests include childhood injury prevention and safety, preventive medicine, clinical quality improvement, advancements in medical education and access to care for underserved populations.
