Karen Burgess, MD

Professor, Department Chair, Pediatrics and Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs


Dr. Karen Burgess is professor and chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the College of Community Health Sciences and serves as the College's assistant dean for Academic Affairs. She also serves as director of the Pediatric Clinic at University Medical Center, which the College operates, and she oversees resident education for the Department of Pediatrics. Burgess is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the American College of Physician Executives.

Burgess graduated from The University of Alabama with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and earned her medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham. She completed residency training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Children’s Hospital of Alabama. She is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics.

Burgess is a member of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians and Investigators and continues to serve as a principal investigator in pediatric clinical trials. She has a research interest in pediatric obesity.
