Dr. John C. Higginbotham, senior vice president for research and economic development for The University of Alabama, will serve as a senior fellow and mentor for UA’s Alabama Life Research Institute fellows and as an advisor to Dr. Sharlene Newman, ALRI executive director.


Dr. Louanne Friend, assistant professor of community medicine and population health, was selected as a ALRI fellow to represent the College. Fellows were selected for their extensive experience and desire to collaborate across colleges and disciplines to find solutions to problems facing the rural, underserved communities of Alabama.

Dr. Greg Bell, assistant professor of community medicine and population health and a senior data analyst, was elected to a second term serving on the National Steering Committee of the Census Bureau’s State Data Center Network. The term lasts three years. The Institute for Rural Health Research is a Coordinating Agency for the Alabama State Data Center.
