New Roles for Faculty in the College

Dr. Connie Leeper

Dr. Connie Leeper was named associate director of The University of Alabama Family Medicine Residency, which is operated by the College of Community Health Sciences. She has served as assistant director of the residency since August 2018. Leeper is assistant professor in the Department of Family, Internal, and Rural Medicine and assists in teaching the College’s family medicine residents and medical students. She also cares for patients at University Medical Center’s Tuscaloosa and Demopolis locations. CCHS operates UMC. Leeper graduated cum laude from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, with a bachelor’s degree in biology. She earned her medical degree and a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. Leeper completed a family medicine residency at the Ventura Family Medicine Residency in Ventura, California, where she served as chief resident. She also completed an obstetrics fellowship at Natividad medical Center in Salinas, California.


Dr. John Burkhardt

Dr. John Burkhardt was named assistant director of The University of Alabama Family Medicine Residency, which is operated by the College of Community Health Sciences. He is assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine and assists in teaching the College’s family medicine residents and medical students. He also cares for patients at University Medical Center, which is operated by the College. Burkhardt received master’s and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in Schaumburg. He completed residency and a fellowship in medical psychology and behavioral medicine at St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields, Illinois. This year, he completed the Behavioral Science/Family Systems Educator Fellowship sponsored by the Society of Teachers in Family Medicine. Burkhardt is a member of the National Register of Health Service Psychologists and the American Psychological Association. He has special interests in mood disorders, psychopharmacology, assessment and promoting integrative care.
