David Nichols is chief operating officer for the College. He is responsible for incorporating strategic direction and operational tactics to help the College achieve its mission of education, clinical service, scholarship and community engagement. Specific areas of responsibility include building management, business development, legal and contract administration, risk management and clinic administration for University Medical Center, which the College operates. Nichols also serves as the designated institutional official for the graduate medical education programs, including The University of Alabama Family Medicine Residency and the College’s fellowships. Nichols earned a bachelor’s degree in Health Care Management from UA and a Masters of Business Administration degree from the University of Houston. He has experience as a health care and business development consultant for academic medical centers and private medical practices. Nichols spent more than a decade in various administrative roles at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and 14 years as the senior executive officer for the Department of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
