Asit Chakraborti

Professor Asit K. Chakraborti is a globally recognized expert in Synthetic Organic and Medicinal Chemistry, bringing a distinguished career spanning over three decades to our department.
He obtained his Ph.D. from IACS, Kolkata, and completed significant post-doctoral research at Clemson University and Purdue University in the USA. He is a former Professor and Head of Medicinal Chemistry at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Mohali.
A prolific scholar, he has guided 41 Ph.D. and 130 Master’s students, published 189 research papers (with an h-index of 69), and filed 42 patents.
His research focuses on new drug discovery for diseases like tuberculosis and leishmaniasis, emphasizing sustainable and green chemistry practices, including the development of novel synthetic methodologies and catalysis. Prof. Chakraborti is an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Indian Academy of Sciences, and Indian National Science Academy, and a recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Ranbaxy Research Award and Chemical Research Society of India Silver and Bronze Medals.
