Health care services at The University of Alabama will expand and become more efficient as the Student Health Center, currently managed by the Division of Student Life, merges its medical services and administrative operations with University Medical Center, which falls under the College of Community Health Sciences. The full transition is expected to be complete by the fall 2021 semester.
In addition to the excellent health care services already provided, in fall 2021 students can expect to have access to streamlined, expanded health care services at the Student Health Center, including in the following areas: gynecological and women’s health, neurology, sports medicine, endoscopy, endocrinology and hospital-based care.
“Providing premier health care services to our students and the broader campus community is, and always has been, our primary goal, which is why we are taking advantage of this opportunity to streamline operations and provide seamless and expanded health care services,” said Dr. Richard Friend, dean of the College of Community Health Sciences, which operates University Medical Center. “Health care is changing rapidly, and this merger allows us to be nimble as a unified health care service provider.”
While the Student Health Center’s physical location and current services will remain, at the end of the spring 2021 semester, psychiatric services will move from the Student Health Center to the Counseling Center in the South Lawn Office Building to allow all mental health services to be coordinated through one central Student Life office.
“Over the past year, our heroic medical providers and campus staff demonstrated the power of collaboration and, through performing invaluable work, unearthed an opportunity to streamline our health care services, which will better serve the patient population and create efficiencies for our staff,” said Dr. Jim Dalton, UA provost and executive vice president. “We will work closely with Student Health Center and University Medical Center staff to ensure this reorganization is seamless and effective.”
