Leading Patient-Centered Medical and Population Health Research
Mission: Develop and implement a research strategy that promotes the College of Community Health Sciences as a leading hub for scholarly training in patient-centered medical research and population health. CCHS will provide the infrastructure, leadership, training and resources to promote integrated scholarly activity, enhance research productivity and increase external funding of research programs throughout the College and The University of Alabama.
Research Vision: CCHS will become a leading hub for transformative, innovative and collaborative physical and behavioral health care through knowledge and scientific discoveries.

Our research efforts are growing
CCHS research awards totaled $26.8 million in 2022.
Our researchers are supported
We are committed to providing faculty and students with the resources and staff support that turn imagination and inspiration into reality.
Our researchers are showcased
CCHS hosts an annual peer-reviewed research and scholarly activity day to showcase medical student, resident physician and faculty research.
Our research makes a difference in the lives of the people we serve
All of Us Research Program is a historic effort to gather data from one million or more people living in the United States to accelerate research and improve health. By taking into account individual differences in lifestyle, environment, and biology, researchers will uncover paths toward delivering precision medicine.
Research Centers
The mission of the Institute for Rural Health Research is to provide affiliated researchers and community partners with collaborations and resources with which to lead transformational, need-driven health related research to ensure the quality of life of those living in rural or other areas of need.
The Center explores, investigates, compares and contrasts the historical and contemporary aspects of the tobacco issue and the role and influence of tobacco in society.
Research Focus Areas
CCHS faculty from a diverse range of disciplines generate knowledge that benefits individuals and communities throughout Alabama and the region. CCHS research focus areas include:
Population Health is concerned with health outcomes of a group of individuals, such as geographic populations, ethnic groups, disabled persons, prisoners, employees or any other defined group.
Health care equity is the attainment of the highest level of health for all people and includes efforts to ensure that all people have full and equal access to opportunities that enable them to lead healthy lives.
Community engaged research is a collaborative process between the researcher and community partner that creates and disseminates knowledge with the goal of contributing to the discipline and strengthening the well-being of the community.
Interprofessional collaborative research occurs when researchers from different health-related professions collaborate.
