Toilet Training

Overview of Toilet Training

The process of toilet training is a significant milestone for young children, marking an important step towards independence and success. However, children with disabilities, including those with delays or impairments in areas such as communication, adaptive skills, and motivation, may face unique challenges in achieving successful toileting. This is especially true for children who struggle with transitions and new routines, such as many children with autism spectrum disorders. To address these challenges, three research-based toileting procedures are presented in this resource. Before implementing any toileting procedure, it is essential to assess the child’s performance and behaviors. The instructional videos featuring Jennifer Ledford, Ph.D., BCBA-D, provide valuable insights into determining a child’s readiness for toilet training and detail the three researched-based procedures for achieving independence and success in toileting.
