Legislation

Section 22-57-20, establishes autism centers in specific regions of Alabama. These centers offer nonresidential resources and training for people of all ages with autism or related developmental disorders, as determined by the Alabama Interagency Autism Coordinating Council. Each center operates independently and delivers evidence-based services in their region. The number of regional centers is determined by the Alabama Interagency Autism Coordinating Council, and they are encouraged to be located on university campuses.

For each center, there’s a constituency board with at least six members, including individuals with disabilities or family members of those with disabilities. These boards meet regularly with the center’s staff to provide guidance on policies and activities and submit annual reports to evaluate the center’s performance.

An annual conference is held to promote collaboration among center staff and constituency boards.

Each center provides staff with expertise in autism and related disabilities, assistance to individuals and families, technical guidance and consultation, professional training programs, and public education initiatives to increase autism awareness.
